Shooting Tips From Chip Engelland

By now, I think you all have heard about Spurs shooting coach Chip Engelland and the phenomenal job he did developing NBA Finals MVP Tony Parker's shot. I e-mailed Chip and asked him what he considered some of the key fundamentals in shooting mechanics. He told me the following:
1. Feet shoulder width.
2. Release should be a one-handed pushing action (Tom Nordland teaches this).
3. Hold your follow through until the shot goes in the basket.
4. When in doubt, shoot!
Lately, I have been researching a lot trying to find the best way to shoot and to teach shooting. There are so many conflicting theories out there. I also asked Chip what shooting resources already on the market he would recommend. I asked him about Nordland and he said Tom does a nice job of teaching the shot. He also said he liked Steve Alford's material and also HIGHLY recommended anything by Mark Price (still looking for that). He also has close ties and highly recommends the shooting coach at the University of Calgary and a good friend of his- Dave Love. Love teaches Chip's method and does shooting camps and clinics. Unfortunately, Dave does not have a book or DVD out at this time. Sadly, Chip has no plans at this time to put out a book and/or a DVD.
